STEP 1: WHO AM I? - OŠ RUDOLFA STROHALA LOKVE, CROATIA

My students from classes 3, 5 and 6 participated in this step. They read the story "I am enough" by Grace Byers. It's a lovely book that tells us that we are all unique; there is no one like us in this world. When things get tough, you have to remember to rise and try whatever it is you are trying to do again.

The book inspired my students in many ways. They wrote what they really liked about themselves on little post-its, because it is important to nourish positive self-image and thoughts.

Then my students picked the thoughts they liked best from the book, illustrated them and copied the wise sayings from the book. In the end we organized an exhibition of their work on our English pinboard.

Here is an example of the post-its with positive and encouraging thoughts about themselves:

Here is an example of an illustration and a lovely thought from the book:

If you want to read and see more of my students' work on the book, here is the link:

My students also had a Google Meet meeting with the schools from Colle and Athens. That was really exciting!

STEP 1- Greece, Reading our first stories

I AM ENOUGH by Grace Byers

and CHI SONO IO by Gianni Rodani

First we read "Chi sono io?" the story of  a little boy, Toto, who was so eager to find out WHO IS HE and kept asking his family, teacher and all people around him until he was satisfied and soooo happy that he was so many things...
My kids loved his curiosity and repetition of all the things he found out for himself that....they started repeating them selves the words in a loud voice as if they were the little ToTo!!
"A figlio, a bambino, a fratello, nipote, cugino,..."
They even learnt a few Italian words by doing so!!!

The second story "I am enough" was about  loving yourself, celebrating your differences and showing respect to  others. Again my students liked it because they saw themselves in every page and started to realise that they have more in common with each other than differences.

I made them a Questionnaire and told them to answer any question they want and I was very happy and touched from the personal things they answered.

I also asked them to draw a heart or a sun  and put on  its rays/lines (spidergram) some characteristics of their character. They did a beautiful job!

STEP 1 - Collaborative work

Here is the "Who am I?" ebook with some of the logos designed by the partner students. Enjoy!

STEP 1 - Scuola Primaria Sant'Andrea, Italy

In this first step, "Who am I?", we analyzed a peculiar aspect of our identity: our personality.

  • We read "Chi sono io?" by Gianni Rodari.
  • The students drew the characters and then they introduced themselves to their partners. They commented on the others' posts.
  • We had a Meet with the Hungarian kids, where we discussed our readings and activities. During the meeting, we organized simple small activities (drawings, questions etc.) with their Twins (one Italian primary student + one Italian secondary student + one Hungarian student).

Then, we had some extra time for this activity as the partners needed more time, so we decided to do something more on our own! Since we were studying the Greek myths, me studied the different aspects of the Gods' personalities. We read some of the most popular myths and legends and tried to understand the Gods' dispositions and characteristics. Each kid chose the God of Goddess they most identified with. They even chose a "God best-friend" who balanced the extremes of their personalities. In order for the students to identify with their God/Goddess and get to describe their personality, they were given this guidelines and this presentation.

We also reflected on the fact that we have a Greek partner from Athens. We decided to organize a meeting with the Greek class and my students are really looking forward to it!

We created a padlet with our God-personalities.

STEP 1 - Who am I? - Aydanur Ay, Turkey

We started to read the story 'Chi sono io' by Gianni Rodari.

My students really enjoyed it, they smiled, they giggled and shared their ideas.

I wanted them to draw some illustrations of the story as a first step.

Then we exchanges ideas with our partners and participated in the Introductions padlet.

STEP 1 - Szegedi Orczy István Általános Iskola, Hungary

We happily started our new reading adventure with the 2nd grade students of Szegedi Orczy István Primary School.
1. As a first step, we got to know the story titled "Who Am I?" by Gianni Rodari. We created a mind map to illustrate the relationship of the main character, Totó, with his family and friends.

2.The children drew, imagined the characters, and told stories about themselves.

3.We introduced ourselves to our partners on Padlet
It was great to read how our twins introduced themselves.

4. We created small groups with the Italian students of primary and secondary and got to know and chatted with them in an online meeting
It was a fantastic and new experience, because our twins and beacuse it was the very first online meeting for our class. We are happy: we can continue our adventure with STEP 2.

STEP 1: Who am I? - Logo creation by Artova Gazipaşa Primary School, Romania

Our first activity, together with the Who am I? readings, was the Logo creation. We saw the images created by our partners and added our own!

STEP 1 - SCUOLA MEDIA LEONARDO DA VINCI - IC2 POGGIBONSI, Italy

We have been working on the E-Twinning Project with classes  3B, 3C and 3D from Scuola Media Leonardo Da Vinci in Poggibonsi.

When we were asked to work on Step 1 "Who am I?" and find some interesting books to read with our students, our choice fell on “Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone” which has become the third best-seller book of all time.

Step 1 has taken three / four weeks to be carried out.

WEEK 1: We invited students to read some short extracts from chapters 1, 4 and 7 of the book and then answer to a list of questions we prepared to check their comprehension.

WEEK 2: We focused on the “The Sorting Hat” chapter. This is when students at Hogwarts magic school are sorted into the four different houses Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. The pages are interesting because the magic hat is able to do this “job” easily enough by simply considering students’ personalities and matching them with the qualities and values represented by each house. Our aim was to offer students a good range of useful adjectives to be used to write their  introductions on the blog page.

WEEK 3: Inspired by the readings students were encouraged to introduce themselves on the blog page.

WEEK 4: We asked students to take a quick QUIZ to find out which Hogwarts House they would be in.

Which Hogwarts House would you be in?

Let the Sorting Hat Quiz match your traits with the four houses of the wizarding world to find out which Hogwarts House you would be in.

Gryffindor: You are chivalrous, passionate, and brave. You have a highly-defined sense of right and wrong, and you are not afraid to speak your mind or fight for what you want.

Slytherin:
You are ambitious, sneaky, resourceful, and not afraid to bend the rules to your advantage.

Ravenclaw:
You are intelligent, witty, wise, perceptive, and quietly brilliant.

Hufflepuff: You are patient, loyal, hard-working, reserved, rational, and down-to-earth. You work well with others, are a great team player, and you always take a stand against injustice.

Take this quiz and answer the questions to find out which of the four magical Hogwarts houses the Sorting Hat will put you in!

What is your result?

This is the result of the quiz taken by class 3C/D

Once they wrote their introductions on the padlet our students was given the possibility to read about other students' descriptions and interact with them. It was fun, inspiring and surprisingly motivating!!😊

This is class 3B getting ready for the meeting!!

STEP 1 - Arnolfo di Cambio, lower secondary, Italy

We worked on this first step "Who am I?" with class 1°B.

  • We read different anthological pieces about identity, then we got to "Chi sono io?" by Gianni Rodari

  • We discussed the reading, we shared ideas and points of view, and then eventually we drew our "id card" on paper.

  • We even drew a picture of our mascot, Bob the plant!

  • We shared our ideas in the padlet with our partners and we commented our Twins' posts.

  • We also discussed, in our class, how we may or may not change in the future. So, we created a "time capsule" with all of our id cards and "buried" it. We decided we would open it at the beginning of our last year at school. We will see then if and how much our identity changed in time.

  • We chose in the padlet our Twins from primary school and from Hungary.

  • We eventually met our partners from primary school and from Hungary in a live meeting and we introduced ourselves and our readings. We had a great time together!

STEP 1: meeting Italy (IC2 Arnolfo di Cambio, primary+secondary) - Hungary

Italian and Hungarian Twins met online after the Christmas break to talk about "Who am I?", with teachers Silvana Rassu, Laura Maffei and Mokika Kiss.

The pupils had the opportunity to meet face to face the Twins they chose in the padlet (1 Italian primary student + 1 Italian secondary student + 1 Hungarian primary student).

Some of the Italian students already knew each other, while for the Hungarian pupils it was a huge surprise! As you can imagine, there was lots of chatting, sharing, making friends... and lots of laughing as well.

We also have one Italian student, Gabriella, who speaks Hungarian, so we were able to greet our partners using their language.

Ok, look at us: we definitely had fun!

STEP 1 - find your twin! - Italy (Scuola primaria Sant'Andrea + lower secondary) and Hungary

"Arnolfo di Cambio" school has classes from pre-primary to lower secondary. In this project, we have one 1st class of Lower Secondary and one 5th (and last) class of primary school.

In order to have our students work together, we decided to pair them - or better, we let the pupils choose their twin! The younger students introduced themselves and the older chose their partner taking into consideration similiarities, differences, common passions.

After creating the pairs, we asked our students to widen the groups to one student from Hungary for each pair. After interacting in the padlet comments, during the next online meetings, the Twins will have the opportunity to actually meet face to face.

Here are our Twinnies!

STEP 1 - Who am I? collaborative activity & readings

The leading question of this first step is "WHO AM I?" - what I want to show about myself to the others.

As agreed, we will choose together a "suggested reading" for each step, so that we can share a common activity on it and hopefully help our students in talking to each other when sharing ideas during the live events.
Anyway, if you want to use other readings, that's fine as long as they respond to the leading question and as long as the students discuss their readings with their peers.

The suggested reading for this first step of the project is "Chi sono io?"(Who am I?) by Gianni Rodari.
Activity:

1. Read the story with your students
2. Encourage a discussion on its meaning
3. The students draw pictures based on the text, representing the characters and themselves
4. They share their drawings and ideas with their classmates
5. They share them with the partners in the INTRODUCTIONS forum and during the live events.

Please remember to share in the project library all the readings you used for STEP 1 - Who am I?
We will discuss the readings during the live meetings.

STEP 1: Introductions forum (January)

The first step of our project refers to the classic quote "Nosce te ipsum": in order to promote wellbeing with our classmates and our partners, we have first of all to get to know ourselves, both in our positive and negative aspects.

Understanding the complexity of ourselves enables us to understand and accept the complexity of the other, without prejudices, without patronising, without refusal, but accapting others in their entirety. In this way we will develop empathy, open minded attitude, ability to welcome others: getting to know ourselves in order to get to know the others.

Via books, we get to know characters, situations, adventures, problems, so that we can widen our personal experiences in getting to know and understand each other. Reading is our way to personal understanding.

Let's go!

“… chi siamo noi, chi è ciascuno di noi se non una combinatoria d'esperienza, d'informazioni, di letture, d'immaginazioni? Ogni vita è un'enciclopedia, una biblioteca, un inventario di oggetti, un campionario di stili, dove tutto può essere continuamente rimescolato e riordinato in tutti i modi possibili.” Italo Calvino
